Product Review: Part 2: Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream

In Part 1 of the Qhemet series I reviewed their Amla & Olive Oil Heavy Cream. In Part two, we will be comparing the Burdock Root Butter Cream.

Cost:
Same as the Amla, it is rather costly at $17 plus shipping for the 8oz/250ml tub and $32 for the 16oz/473ml tub. Including shipping, this works out at Kshs 2,364/- and Kshs 3,686/- respectively. More expensive than Shea Moisture products which I also use but the same price as Carol's Daughter's Healthy Hair Butter which I have also used.
Update July 2014:
6 months down, I have only used about a third of this, although I use it very frequently. I will probably have this for another 10-12 months which makes it great value for money.

Appearance:

Burdock Root butter is also a water based cream but because water is it's first ingredient, it is very light, much lighter than the Amla Cream. It has a light, frothy appearance and smells much more citrusy than the Amla Cream, nicer, I think.

Ingredients:
A few red flags
  • Distilled Water
  • Burdock Root Extract
  • Nettle leaf and Oatstraw extract
  • Olive Oil
  • Vegetable Glycerin
  • Fatty Alcohols
  • Stearalkonium Chloride: used as a conditioning agent and emulsifier but according to this article is a toxic chemical that should be avoided...*yikes!
  • MSM: used to promote hair growth
  • Essential oils
  • Maltodextrin: humectant but also coating agent: could potentially cause buildup
  • Food grade paraben/formaldehyde free preservatives
Uses:

1. Moisturiser:
Because water is the first ingredient, this makes it a great moisturiser and I can use it directly on dry hair to moisturise my hair without having to spritz it first. It goes on very light and absorbs easily into the hair and as a result, this has replaced Amla as my daily moisturiser as it leaves less build-up. I find, however, that I need to use it in conjunction with an oil, at least for the ends. It keeps my hair well moisturised when I wear it in a protective style but when my hair is open, it can feel dry by evening so I prefer something more heavy duty.

Conclusion:
I do like this product; it is light and moisturising and goes on easily. However, I wouldn't use it as my sole moisturising product as it is a little too light for my hair. It needs the assistance of a heavier product. The label says that it works well for fine, thin hair but although my strands are fine/medium, my hair is high porosity so it can get dry easily. I would buy this again but only in conjunction with another product such as The Olive and Honey Hydrating Balm which I am dying to get. Product Junkiesm lives on. Sigh.
